The last house Luis Barragán designed, still lived in.

Casa Gilardi · San Miguel Chapultepec, Mexico City, Mexico

Luis Barragán’s final house remains a private home in San Miguel Chapultepec. It shows that a house can be a serious work of architecture without becoming a museum.

A courtyard with a lavender wall, a bright pink wall behind a tree, and a white wall set with a row of yellow vertical panels, with clay jars, stone spheres and a circular labyrinth laid out on the paving.

Most celebrated houses end up as museums. Casa Gilardi, the last house Luis Barragán designed, is still a home. It was built in 1976 in San Miguel Chapultepec and is lived in by its owners today.

That changes the visit. Tours are guided by a current resident or authorized staff, last about an hour and are booked only through the house’s official website. There are no agencies, no walk-ins and no professional cameras. The house sets the terms, which is part of the point.

Serious architecture, still doing the ordinary work of a home.

Book a day or two ahead, arrive on time and leave the camera bag behind. Much of what makes the visit worthwhile is that the house is still lived in.

Selected because we like it. If we have a commercial relationship with anything in the Guide, we'll tell you.
