The Adjacent Guide
TravelA small valley town that makes a better weekend than the famous stops nearby.
Los Alamos · Santa Barbara County, California
A former stagecoach stop at the northern tip of the Santa Ynez Valley that has become a serious place to eat and drink without losing its scale.
Los Alamos sits at the northern tip of the Santa Ynez Valley and was founded in 1876 as a stagecoach stop. The frontier bones are still visible: cottonwoods along the creek and a line of historic buildings on Bell Street.
What has changed is what happens inside them. Bell Street now holds restaurants, cafés and tasting rooms, and the town has earned a reputation as a place to eat and drink well. It has kept its unpretentious scale, and it still feels like a town rather than an attraction.
Go for a slow day, not an itinerary.
Arrive without much of a plan, walk Bell Street end to end and let the day set its own pace. That is the whole appeal.
